Important Information Before Your First Competition

Please Note: This video was created for parents of our junior program but all the information applies to adult competitors also

Video Summary:

Check the competition rules page before the event for uniform and rule details. Requirements vary by competition.

What to wear:

Tight-fitting sports shirt or rash guard is required. Shorts must have no pockets or zippers and not be excessively long.

Competition format matters:

Round-robin formats are ideal because they guarantee multiple matches, even if you lose.

Learn how to use Smoothcomp:

You should know how to find match times, mat numbers, and live updates using the Matches tab.

Match times are live and can change:

Matches can move earlier if other matches end quickly. Always refresh Smoothcomp regularly.

Arrive early:

Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before the scheduled match time to avoid rushing or missing matches.

Know where to go on the day:

Smoothcomp shows the mat number and match order. Wait near the correct mat as the match approaches.

Check-in and weigh-in are mandatory:

Competitors must check in and weigh in on arrival. There is no leniency if you are over your registered weight.

Waiting between matches:

Keep refreshing Smoothcomp while waiting. Head to the mat about 20 minutes before the match.

Protective equipment:

Mouthguards are optional. Groin guards are not allowed for kids or adults in jiu-jitsu competitions.
