Important Information Before The Kids First Competition

Video Summary:

Check the competition rules page before the event for uniform and rule details. Requirements vary by competition.

What to wear:

Tight-fitting sports shirt or rash guard is required. Shorts must have no pockets or zippers and not be excessively long.

Competition format matters:

Round-robin formats are ideal for kids because they guarantee multiple matches, even if a child loses. Elimination formats can end a child’s day after one loss.

Learn how to use Smoothcomp:

Parents should know how to find match times, mat numbers, and live updates using the Matches tab.

Match times are live and can change:

Matches can move earlier if other matches end quickly. Always refresh Smoothcomp regularly.

Arrive early:

Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before the scheduled match time to avoid rushing or missing matches.

Know where to go on the day:

Smoothcomp shows the mat number and match order. Wait near the correct mat as the match approaches.

Check-in and weigh-in are mandatory:

Competitors must check in and weigh in on arrival. There is no leniency if a child is over their registered weight.

If over weight, the child cannot compete:

They will not be moved to another division on the day.

Waiting between matches:

Keep refreshing Smoothcomp while waiting. Head to the mat about 20 minutes before the match.

Warm-ups are optional:

Kids generally don’t need them, but if they choose to warm up, do so about 20–25 minutes before match time.

Kids divisions move quickly:

Most kids will complete all matches within about an hour since they usually compete early in the day.

What to bring:

Water or sports drink is recommended. Food/snacks are usually unnecessary due to short competition time.

Protective equipment:

Mouthguards are optional. Groin guards are not allowed for kids or adults in jiu-jitsu competitions.
